UAW Reception with Gallery Talks by Exhibiting Artists: Saturday June 27 3 — 5

IRON AND INDIGO features nine contemporary artists using natural pigments, dyes, and other land-based media– from corn cobs to cochineal ink – to diverse conceptual ends. Leveraging their materials to evoke specific regions and histories, resist extractive industry, and grapple with the Anthropocene, these artists explore the creative possibilities offered by eco-conscious ways of seeing and making.

Including works by Esteban Cabeza de Baca, Julia Clift, Courtney Dudley, Ellie Irons, Lydia Kern, Laini Nemett, Kate Stewart, Nichole van Beek, and Allie Wist. Curated by Laini Nemett and Julia Clift.

These artists reveal the possibilities of materials made or gathered thoughtfully, outside of extractive industries that go hand-in-hand with the climate crisis, colonialism, and environmental injustices. Visually, the exhibition revels in seductive hues and textures, showcasing the spectacular and nuanced qualities of what lies beyond the art supply store.
